This is a common situation unfortunately, in a world with many isolated elderly people: if someone gets too old to take care of him- or herself, but there’s nobody around to help make arrangements, what happens to the aging person — and what happens to his or her pets?
An animal protection organization in Chicago got a call from a utilities worker who’d seen something… An Anti-Cruelty Society volunteer rushed to the location, a house in South Chicago whose older owner was no longer able to take care of himself. And in his basement was a creature whom nobody was taking care of either.
At first it looked like a shapeless pile of hair. It wasn’t clear what kind of animal was under that mess until the volunteer caught a glimpse of a sweet, funny face: a Persian cat. It almost brought him to tears seeing the animal so wretched.
He caught the poor thing, brought him in to their headquarters, and everyone gathered round. Sinbad, as he was called, needed urgent care. First came a haircut. During the grooming, they removed five pounds of matted fur.
Now that his weight had been cut in half, the cat could finally move freely — or that’s what they had assumed.
But it became clear that something much worse had happened. Nine-year-old Sinbad had been tangled and neglected for so long that his leg muscles had atrophied. Elliott Serrano of the animal protection organization explained how they dealt with it: “We had to force feed him for a bit to make sure his digestive system would keep working and not hurt his kidneys.”
Soon though, Sinbad began to perk up. He gradually gained strength, grew back his soft, beautiful fur, and re-learned to walk. Elliott agreed to take Sinbad home for the holidays so the kitty wouldn’t be all alone at the animal rescue offices and pretty quickly, he fell in love.
“I’m just astounded at how he just loves people, even though people haven’t always treated him very well,” he said. “It’s a lesson we could all learn.”
After sharing Sinbad’s story on social media Elliott noticed that so many people loved hearing about the cat, that he should perhaps offer more: now Sinbad has his ownInstagram account full of adorable pictures!
