Richard Newberry owns an auto repair shop in St. Petersburg, Florida. Every day for three weeks he noticed a tiny woman walking past his lot to an unknown destination.

The woman didn’t seem particularly cheerful, but one Friday she was visibly upset, her eyes filled with tears. Richard decided to go out and talk to her. The woman told him that she was very sad and had nothing left to live for. What she then confessed left the mechanic literally shaking.
Her name was Ernestina Nuñez and she was a janitor at an institute located almost a mile from Richard's workshop. Her son was a former U.S. Marine who suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder. A year ago that month, he had done the unthinkable: he had shot himself, ending his life. He left behind two young children.
Ernestina couldn’t find the strength to continue. She talked about ending her life. "I don’t have any friends," she confided. Richard's words were, “Now you have a friend. I’m going to come out here everyday and talk to you.” But then he did something that changed her life completely. Despite the drop in sales during the summer, the mechanic didn’t hesitate for a moment. He told her she could keep one of the vehicles on his lot: for free! This way, she wouldn’t have to walk the long journey every day to her workplace.
What makes a complete stranger do something so generous for someone else? “I’ve had trouble in my past. I’ve done a lot of bad things in my life. I broke the law. I’ve been homeless. I’ve been to prison.” He knows how it feels “thinking you have nothing left to go for,” he said. In the video you’ll witness the moment when Richard communicates his decision to Ernestina. I was on the verge of tears!
