This Greek Cafe doubles as an overnight sleeping spot for stray dogs! The photo showing the strays sleeping together in a warm and safe environment has been making the rounds online and animal lovers everywhere are loving it.

Nope, they didn’t sneak in, they were allowed in the cafe which is called Hott Spott and is located in Mytilene, Lesbos. They open their doors every night, specifically so local stray dogs can have a peaceful, safe and warm place to sleep for the evening. It’s been going on since July, and they plan on continuing to keep it up. Here’s what a server at the cafe named Antonis has to say:

“In the city there are many dogs. When the bar closes each night, the dogs come and sleep here. We don’t have a problem. From July, every night there is a dog on the couch.”

Strays are treated differently in Greece. They are microchipped, spayed/nuetered, vaccinated, collared and cared for primarily by the community. While other countries are enamored with kill shelter practices, this sure seems like a better alternative.
Here’s the head of Athen’s Stray Animal service explaining the differences:
“In most European countries, they solve this problem [of stray dogs] with euthanasia. But Greek culture is against that. Our law is about rehabilitating the dogs. People here take care of them and love them. They are like everyone’s dog.”
Here’s the Takeaway: All life is precious. Take a note from the people of Lesbos and know that ordinary people just like you are striving to make the world a better place.
