Most of us have cooked with aluminum foil before, so this news is definitely pretty shocking.
First off, aluminum is simply bad for the brain. They call it a neurotoxic heavy metal, and it has actually been linked to Alzheimer’s disease for years.
So the exposure to this metal, leads to not only mental decline, but coordination, bodily control, memory, and balance are also negatively effected.
And this looks to be permanent damage as well.
Cooking with aluminum foil can affect bones as well, as it may build-up inside the bones, competing with calcium for the tight bone space, and it usually wins out. So the calcium you desperately need for proper bone health, you basically lose.
Cooking with aluminum also has negative effects on your lungs as you breath in aluminum particles causing respiratory problems. Pulmonary fibrosis can occur.
Grilling with aluminum is also cause for harm as you still may be breathing in the particles.
While aluminum cans have been called dangerous in the past, somehow tin foil got a pass.
The high temps aluminum foil is exposed to, causes parts of the metal to go in your food. But even if these minuscule pieces do not break off, the chemical leaching of aluminum may take place when cooking with certain spices or lemons.
He’s a chemical engineering researcher at the American University of Sharjah, and he has studied aluminum and cooking. His name is Dr. Essam Zubaidy, and he found that one tin foil cooked meal can actually be leached on by 400 mg of aluminum.
Here’s what he has to say:
“The higher the temperature, the more the leaching. Foil is not suitable for cooking and is not suitable for using with vegetables like tomatoes, citrus juice or spices.”
The limit for aluminum intake? The World Health Organization says not to ingest more than 60 mg of aluminum daily!
Basically, if you are cooking with aluminum, your health is going to be at risk.
