While homeless individuals “flying a sign” for money is not uncommon in big cities, sometimes it pays to actually read the writing on the cardboard, as every now and again you’ll come across an unusual request that isn’t typical.
Such was the case in Houston, Texas, where Wilma Price drives by many individuals requesting money on a daily basis. It’s not uncommon, but this time it was a sign outside of a Wal-Mart that caught her eye and gave her reason to pause.
A homeless man was holding the sign which indicated that his dog was stuck in the pound and he could use some assistance in getting the dog out.
It certainly wasn’t your usual cardboard sign request as Wilma states:
“I’ve seen every sign in the world except that one. I tried to pull to the side and of course everybody’s pissed off because I’m blocking them and I asked him what his deal was.”
So the man tells her that he needs $120 to get his dog out. Wilma only had $8 to her name though. Nevertheless, she gave the man her card and said she’d try to come up with a solution.
Wilma then called the pound, and indeed the story was true. And the amount of money needed to get the dog out was also accurate.
Wilma asked why the amount was so much. They stated a $35 impoundment fee, then they gave it rabies shots, a heartworm test and a flea prevention which increased the total to $120.
Wilma asked a friend if they could help, then she went back to the man to figure out what his story was.
The man was named Patrick, age 30, and he had been in jail for trespassing. His dog, Fred Frederick, was then sent to the pound, while he remained imprisoned for two days.
They then both went to the pound, and they got the dog out.
Fred Frederick was extremely happy to see his owner. He was “shaking when he came out of the pound.” Patrick in turn was moved to tears when reunited with his companion.
He then proceeded to give the woman all the money he had collected thus far. But Wilma refused.
“I wouldn’t accept it because maybe he can have some dinner tonight.” Wilma wishes she had enough to hook up Patrick with a motel room for a week.
They then went back to the Wal-Mart.
Wilma said the following in closing:
“Sometimes you just have to dig deeper and do what’s right in your heart.”
