Sharon Grant was in her 28th week of pregnancy when doctors told her the bad news. Apparently, the baby inside her belly wasn’t being properly nourished, and so the baby has stopped growing. They had to put her under emergency C-section in order to save the baby.

When the baby was brought into the world, she was so small that she would fit into an adult’s palm. Pixie Griffiths-Grant weighed a mere 1.1lbs when she was born. Though she was that small, she was safely delivered, until her temperature started to drop.

Doctors knew they had to keep her warm right away, and had only one thing in mind—to save her no matter what. They put a hat over her head, and put her inside a plastic sandwich bag before rushing her to the intensive care unit. Sharon was surprised by their method but decided not to intervene.

“It was so random that they had her in the Tesco [grocery chain] bag – it must have just been what the operating theatre had at the time. The bag acted like a greenhouse, bless her.”

But it was just the start. For the first 18 days of Pixie’s life, Sharon wasn’t able to hold her. In the next three months, Pixie was kept in an incubator to keep her warm.

And finally at 5 months old, Pixie was strong enough to go home—she could now breathe on her own. At that point, Pixie already weighed 7.5lbs. Though she might be small for babies her age, Sharon believed her daughter will get better as she grows. All that mattered now was they were finally a complete family: Sharon, her husband Edward, and little Pixie.
