Wang Yan is a young man from Gelong, China. At the height of the economic boom in China, he was able to earn quite a bit of money for himself. But now he's giving it all away for an amazing cause: rescuing dogs in need.
This wonderful story began in tragedy: In 2012, Wang Yan's favorite dog disappeared. He searched everywhere, but wasn't ever able to find him again. He even tried looking in one of the worst dog slaughterhouses in the country without any success.
But what he encountered there affected him deeply. He decided that too many innocent animals were being killed for meat. He spontaneously decided to buy the whole slaughterhouse and transform it into a sanctuary for stray dogs. He's already saved the lives of more than 2,000 dogs.
Yan provides all his dogs with food, a warm shelter, and any necessary medicine. His goal is to eventually find caring homes for each of the animals. He's also been hugely successful in this endeavor: Of the thousands of dogs Yan's rescued, only 215 remain unadopted. Even so, caring for more than 200 dogs over a long period of time is expensive and soon he'll have spent the last of his savings.
He's now asking for donations to help him continue his care for these animals. He refuses money and only accepts food and other supplies, because he doesn't want to profit from the generosity of his fellow people.
