For five entire decades, Raju the elephant was shackled, caged, and abused as he was forced to walk the streets in India for the amusement of tourists. One look at the poor creature and his evident scars and malnutrition revealed the extent of his suffering.
Still, his spirit endured all those long years until, finally, rescuers from the UK-based organization Wildlife SOS arrived. A truly magical moment occurred once Raju realized why they had come for him…

For 24 hours every day, Raju the elephant was held in chains, unable to move freely. The cruelty he faced for 50 years was almost unfathomable.

So, when the rescuers from Wildlife SOS arrived to free him, Raju was a little apprehensive. When he realized why they had come, though, an amazing thing happened: he began to cry.

The team was astounded to see tears roll down his face during the rescue,” said aid worker Pooja Binepal.

“It was incredibly emotional. We knew in our hearts he realized he was being freed. Elephants are majestic and highly intelligent animals. We can only imagine what torture the past half a century has been for him.”

The rescuers believed that Raju was kidnapped from his mother in the wild and had been passed around by cruel owners for decades since. Thankfully, he was finally free.

Now, he lives peacefully in a sanctuary in India with other rescued elephants for company. Said Pooja: “Today he knows what freedom is and he will learn what kindness feels like.”

It’s horrifying to think that anyone could treat an animal so cruelly, but it still happens around the world every day. Thank goodness Raju is finally safe and surrounded with love; he certainly deserves it.
