The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is often considered the most sacred ground in the entirety of the United States of America. This tomb is dedicated to helping to grieve the loss of our fallen soldiers. The Tomb represents the loss of our loved ones while still celebrating the sacrifice and honor of the men and women who have given up their lives to protect our freedom.
For many people, visiting the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is almost a pilgrimage for those who visit our nation’s capital, to view the changing of the guard, and to stare upon the huge slab of breathtaking marble is something that many people have to experience at least once in their lives. Since 1921, when the Unknown Soldiers of WWI were laid to rest at the Tomb, thousands and thousands of people have flocked to the Tomb to pay their respects.
But when a group of people came to this hallowed ground, they must not have been aware that this place was meant to honor the fallen men and women of the wars of the past. The men who sacrificed not only their lives, but their very identities in order to answer our nation’s call. Some people just don’t understand the word “respect,” but as they started to giggle, one of the Tomb Guards decided he had finally heard enough.
So while a group of people were busy giggling away, the guard broke his 21 step walk and shouted, “It is requested that everyone maintain an atmosphere of silence and respect at all times!” The crowd instantly fell silent, and suddenly the guard was right back to his never-ending march. 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, in hot weather or freezing temperatures, the Tomb Guard will always remain at their post to maintain the honor and respect that our nation’s fallen deserve.
If you haven’t been to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, put it on your list of “things you have to do!”
And please SHARE this story if you think people should be more respectful of our nation’s fallen heroes!
